Buying a Car in British Columbia: Your Rights & VSA Rules

Last updated October 4, 2026

British Columbia regulates vehicle sales through VSA (Vehicle Sales Authority of BC) — separately from every other province, with its own rules on who's allowed to sell and how complaints get handled. Here's what that actually means for you before you sign anything.

Confirm you're actually dealing with a licensed dealer

Only VSA-licensed dealers and salespeople can sell vehicles in BC — you can verify a dealer's licence directly with the VSA before you buy. A legitimate dealer won't flinch at this — hesitation or a dodge is a signal worth paying attention to on its own.

The VSA investigates unlicensed selling and dealer misconduct; a complaint against a licensed dealer goes through them, not a general consumer office.

There's no change-of-mind period on a purchase

BC's cooling-off period for vehicles applies to leases, not purchases — don't assume you can cancel a signed purchase agreement just because you changed your mind. Everything in this guide is meant to happen before your signature goes on the paperwork, not after.
