Buying a Car in New Brunswick: Your Rights & FCNB Rules

Last updated October 4, 2026

New Brunswick regulates consumer protection through FCNB (Financial and Consumer Services Commission) — and dealer sales carry a specific warranty protection that private sales don't. Here's what that actually means for you before you sign anything.

Your dealer-sale warranty protections can't be waived

The Consumer Product Warranty and Liability Act covers vehicles bought from a dealer (not private sales), and you cannot sign away those protections with a waiver. A dealer asking you to sign away these protections, or implying “as-is” removes them entirely, isn't describing the law correctly.

Get any extended service contract in writing

FCNB recommends getting any extended service contract's terms in writing before you agree to it — verbal promises from the finance office aren't enforceable. Whatever you're told verbally in the finance office, treat it as provisional until it's on paper in front of you.
